GRAFTING

Most commonly, grafting is used as a method of plant or tree propagation. Also it is successfully used to repair injured or even broken trees. It should be said that grafting is an ancient art of inserting a small piece of one plant into another plant, and fully expected to grow. These parts should all grow as one into one unit. There are many different ways to do this and many different reasons for doing it. You can even establish a branch that bears male flowers, on a tree or shrub that regularly grows only female flowers. This of course will promote fruiting and produce specimens that consist of more than one variety, growing and flourishing on the same rootstock.

THE SCION

Generally speaking, only the plants belonging to the groups dicotyledons and conifers,can be successfully grafted. When the grafting process is performed,it is done by inserting part of a stem or sometimes called a shoot into a piece of root. The part inserted is called the scion, the part the scion is inserted into is called the stock.

Plants that are not closely related botanically can not be successfully grafted. Also all plants that are closely related cannot be grafted one into the other. Grafting plants belonging to different families is not practical, However there are exceptions.

GRAFTING IS AN ANCIENT ART

Grafting is actually an ancient art. It is one of the oldest gardening practices.In China grafting has been performed for, who knows how long. Natural grafting has occurred always. Natural grafting happens when two branches come in close contact with one another, actually touching tightly for a period of time. Natural grafting is more likely to occur with thin bark trees. Natural grafting between roots is also very common.

GRAFTING APPLES AND PEARS

What I would really like to get into now is the art of grafting Apples and Pears. This is the subject matter that I am really excited to get into. This particular subject is usually performed in the spring,like from the middle of March or first of May, depending on where you hail from.this is carried out when the sap rising freely.To make it simple the exact time is when the buds on the stock or branch, are just starting to grow, but before the buds on the scions or grafts have started into any growth. Weak or diseased or unhealthy shoots are undesirable.

It is very important to use the correct stocks for the different kinds of fruit. The stocks are normally most suitable for grafting, when one or two years old, and with the stems little more than one half of an inch. The scion is tied in place or bound with a soft string, leaving the bottom bud on the scion free. Then the whole thing is covered with a grafting wax making an air tight seal, or union if you will. Now they make a special grafting tape to cover and hold the union.and to hold and secure it in place. It is also important when performing these grafts, the sooner you get them sealed the better.
