While there are thousands of different orchid species and hybrids, there are only two main types. I know it's amazing. Terrestrial orchids are species that grow on the ground. And epiphytes orchids which grow in trees, rocks or on poles.

Terrestrial Orchids

These orchids grow just like regular plants. Their roots grow just beneath the surface of the ground. Some terrestrial orchids are considered semi-terrestrial which means they have both underground and aerial root systems. The most famous terrestrial species is the Cymbidium orchid. It was the first species successfully cultivated. Today it has over 40 species and thousands of hybrids. They can be found naturally from southeast Asia all the way to Australia. Cymbidium orchids make an excellent beginner orchid because they are exceptional hardy. And if taken care of will produce a beautiful bloom every year. Cymbidium orchids are unique in another was as well. They also grow on trees and rocks like our next type of orchid.

Epiphytes Orchids

These orchids like to grow on structures like trees, poles and rocks. "Epiphytes" is more than a type of orchid it is also a term used to describe any plant that has a root system above ground. While they grow on structures they don't get any nutrients from them. Instead they rely on their root system. Their root system works like a net that traps organic material. The accumulated organic material provides the nutrients the plant needs to survive. Epiphytes Orchids roots are unique because they have a spongy off- white covering that turns a light green when it is saturated. This covering acts like a sponge that absorbs water and the roots retain moisture and gradually release it over time to sustain the orchid. It is this amazing root system that sustains an orchid through wet and dry periods.

Dendrobiums

With over 1000 species, Dendrobiums are one of the best known species of Epiphytes Orchids. They don't flower as easily as Cymbidiums. They are easy to take care of, but they require a little more work compared to Cymbidiums. Dendrobiums are found naturally in the tropical climates of Northern India, South East Asia, Australia and Polynesia. They grow best in a warm, humid and moist home climates.

Phalaenopsis

These easy to grow orchids come in a variety of colors ranging from pink, yellows to purples, some even have stripes. They are often called wedding orchids because they are so commonly used at weddings because they have beautiful long-lasting flowers. And enough color variety to suit any bride and grooms needs.
