Books have been written about it, movie storylines have revolved around it, and Broadway plays have been based on it. It's the story of the millions of people who leave their homes in the suburbs to try to "make it" in the big city. This leap of faith can bring success, fame, or simply independence. Unfortunately, it often also brings small living spaces. It can be really difficult to be proud of a tiny apartment - you don't have much seating, you have limited space for your stuff, and it can feel very cramped if too many people come over to visit at once.

Don't let your small space cramp your style. Here are five decorating tips to turn your small space into a home that you can be proud of.

1. Make it cozy: Your space is already small, so why not also make it cozy? Use warm paint colors on an accent wall, drape your windows with fabric, and place blankets and throw pillows on your couch(es) to create that comfy, cozy feel that compels your guests to sit and stay awhile.

2. Reduce clutter: Clutter can make your space-challenged apartment feel chaotic and even smaller. To reduce clutter, use items that can serve both aesthetic and functional purposes. Larger furniture pieces will actually make your space look a little bigger and they often have lots of storage space. If you have a large bookshelf, you can stuff it to capacity and hide all of its contents by covering the bookshelf with a curtain...preferably one that matches your window treatments. Ottomans and chests that have space for storage can serve as seats or tables and also allow you to store items in a safe place. Store loose papers and other small items in stylish boxes that compliment your color scheme.

3. Create seating: Those ottomans with storage serve as great extra seating options for your guests. You can also make your own seats by buying foam cushions and covering them with fabric that matches your décor. These creative seats make sitting on your floor a little more comfortable and acceptable...and when they're not in use you can simply stack them and store them out of sight.

4. Cover up bare walls: Large paintings can make your space look larger but this can come with a hefty price tag. A more affordable option is to purchase wall decals, which come in a wide variety of sizes, shapes, colors, and themes. Wall decals can be used on virtually any surface that's clean and smooth and they are quick and easy to use with no artistic skill or tools required. They are especially great for renters since they are easily removable and don't do damage to your walls. You can find wall decals with modern patterns, decals that look like trees and flowers, decals of celebrities and musicians, decals that are sports-related, decals that are holiday themed, inspirational quote decals, dry erase and chalkboard decals to keep you organized, and even wall decal mirrors.

5. Pay attention to details: It's the little things that make your space special. Photos bring a personal touch to your place, while accent pillows, rugs, and lamps show off your style.
