A truck's air brake system relies on a relay valve to provide the required pressure to the service brakes. This device receives a signal from the brake pedal and opens the air valve, which sends 10psi to the rear service brakes. In most semi-trailer systems, the air brake system is 60 feet (18 meters) from the brake controls.

Quick release valve

The Quick release truck air brake valve is one of the most important parts of the vehicle's air braking system. It controls the release of air pressure from the brake chamber when the brakes are applied. The quick release valve also serves as the exhaust valve for air from the brake chamber. When air pressure is released from the quick release truck air brake valve, the exhaust port of the vehicle will raise. This leakage can occur for several reasons. The leakage can be caused by a dirty valve or a worn out diaphragm.

A quick release valve reduces the time taken for brake air to release from the braking system. Typically, this type of valve has two delivery ports: one on the supply side and one on the exhaust side. When the brake pedal is depressed, air flows toward the braking chamber. When the pedal is released, air flows through the quick release valve mounted in the nearby brake chamber. This allows the air in the brake chamber to release before the pressure is reduced in the relay valve's exhaust port.
Crack pressure

The crack pressure on a truck air brake valve is a critical part of the braking system. This pressure is measured in pounds per square inch (psi). All valves have a similar crack pressure, so the crack pressure of a new, high-quality valve will be assumed to be the same as that of a generic, low-quality valve. In reality, a valve rated for 4 psi may open at 3.5 to 4.5 psi, while a 7.5 psi valve may require a 6.5 to 8.5-psi crack pressure to close. The stiffness of the piston-return spring also varies, which can greatly affect crack pressure.

When the crack pressure of a truck air brake valve is low, it may cause wheel lockup or push the trailer. On the other hand, a high crack pressure may cause insufficient braking and premature application. If the crack pressure is too high, the brakes may not close properly, and the vehicle will roll or push when applying brakes. Another important factor in crack pressure is the speed at which the brakes release.
Relay valve delay time

The Relay valve delay time for truck air brakes is one of the most important aspects of a vehicle's braking system. The reason this delay is necessary is because the system can sometimes get stuck and fail to release the brakes. To solve this problem, engineers design relay valves that have a delay time of 0.5 to 2 seconds. The delay time is based on the response times of each subassembly in a loop. The subassemblies are comprised of three different types: the treadle valve, the controlling pipeline, and the relay valve.

A typical relay valve has two distinct delay times, the front and rear four loops. In order to measure the delay time of the rear four loops, the driver depresses the brake pedal. This opens the supply port of the relay valve, which directs air from the remote air supply to the rear service brake chambers. The air pressure delivered to the rear service brake chambers equals the control-pressure from the foot-valve. The driver then partially releases the brake pedal, reducing the air pressure delivered to the rear service brake chambers. The exhaust port of the relay valve opens and closes.
