Some people think that roses are hard to grow. While that may be true for some of the delicate hybrids, there are a large number of varieties that require minimal to almost no care to thrive. Below are a few varieties that do not require extraordinary care on the part of the rose gardener.

Eglantine Rose (Rosa Rubiginosa) - The Wild Rose

Native roses are found on almost every continent. These roses will bloom and thrive whether they are cared for or not. While this may sound attractive, take precaution in choosing a truly wild rose for your garden. When a rose (or any other plant) is grown in its native area, there are natural inhibitors in the soil that will keep all of the plants in that particular ecosystem in balance and prevent any one particular plant from becoming invasive. However if transported to another climate those inhibitors will be absent. In those cases, a foreign plant can overrun the area and choke out the native plants. The Rosa Rubiginosa is considered a weed in parts of Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. It is so invasive in those areas that the sale and propagation of the plant is prohibited.

However, in locations where the wild rose is a natural fit in the climate, it can be considered an asset. In Argentina and Chile, the plant is used in manufacturing cosmetics and marmalade. The country of Tunisia uses the plant in the creation of organic rose water, a natural skin toner and cleanser.

Martha Gonzales Rose

This rose has an interesting history. While on a "rose rustling" trip in South Texas in 1982, Patty Puryear discovered was given a cutting of a small China rose by Martha Gonzales. The rose turned out to be a "lost" variety. It was named after Ms. Gonzales and has since become a widespread favorite in zones 7-9. Considered an "almost wild" rose, it needs a minimum of care, is not picky about soil conditions, and does fairly well in more shaded areas as well. With its continuous blooms all summer long, it has become very popular as a landscape plant.

Chinese Butterfly Rose (Rosa mutabilis)

Another disease resistant, easy-to-care for rose is the Chinese Butterfly rose. It is not only popular due to its easy maintenance, but it also has a unique coloring to the blooms. Up to sever different colors of flowers can be found on one bush.

The Knock Out Rose

The ARS Members Choice Award in 2004, the Knock Out rose is not only known for its beauty, but the ease with which it is grown as well. Popular as either a landscape or container rose, it is resistant to common rose problems such as blackspot and Japanese Beetles. For those who would like the easy of care of the Knock Out, but want something a little different than the standard red, the rose also comes in a pink and rainbow variety.
