Roses are the favorite flower of many around the world. Unfortunately, roses grow better, more vibrant and healthy in certain climates and not others. While definitely a hearty enough plant for one so delicately beautiful, roses will not grow without enough warmth and sunshine, which does exclude many areas of the world.

So where do roses grow? Almost everywhere as most species are native to Asia, others to North America, Europe and northwestern Africa. They are popular plants that are grown in gardens all over the world, and are cultivated for their longtime popular fragrant scent. There are many different varieties of roses, with about 100 different species. Colors range from white to very deep red and can be genetically engineered as well, for example, the Sterling rose is a beautiful lavender/purple rose, and soon, blue roses will be available to the public as well. As blue is most of the population's favorite color, couple them with most women's favorite flower and you've got an unbeatable marketing combination.

Where do roses grow in the garden best? They hate over-soggy areas in the yard. If roses are planted in an area of the yard that retains rainwater, they will not flourish. If the area is just a little wet, the wetness can be modified with some sand. On the flip side, roses do not like overly dry areas either and this can be remedied with some peat moss, manure or compost. The best thing to do if you're unsure is create a raised bed for these plants. It is easier to take control of the rose's needs in a raised bed, for example, it is less likely to have to compete with weeds, which can eat up more water and more nutrients than the rose can.

Roses come in so many varieties you would be hard pressed to find someone who disliked them. With over 100 species, there is one for practically any and all occasions. Each are lovely and different enough to make a different statement.

-Old Garden Roses come in nearly every bloom color and pattern you can imagine. These amazing roses range in height from a mere 12 inches to a whopping 50 feet. Some examples of these are Sombreuil, Rose de Rescht, and Lady Banks.

-Polyanthas are nearly forgotten. These petite roses are now only (usually) available through mail order catalogues. Where do roses grow? These grow in low-lying bushes and small flower clusters. Some examples are polyanthas are China Doll, The Fairy, and Verdun.

-Mini-Floras is a newer classification of rose. As their name suggests, these flowers are smaller in every sense, the blooms are only ½-'' to 2'' in width. These are popular because of their controlled size. Some examples of mini-floras include Dr. John Dickman, Autumn Splendor, and Butter Cream.

In the United States, there are certain times of year when the planting of roses should take place. In the Pacific Northwest, that time is between January and April, in South Central USA, it's December to February, along the East Coast, it's March til June, and then again in October and November.
