If you and your loved one are staying in this Valentine's day, make a loving gesture with breakfast in bed or a carefully prepared romantic dinner for two. Here are a few tips to make your mealtimes extra-special and super-stylish.

Bed and Breakfast

Nothing says 'I love you' quite like a carefully prepared breakfast in bed. If it's well-presented it won't matter whether it's tea and toast, or champagne and strawberries.

Get the look

A plain tray is best, as it won't detract from the overall impact. Along with your choice of breakfast, add a posy of your partner's favourite flowers and a scattering of heart-shaped accessories or chocolates.

Rose Tinted

If you're a classic romantic, Valentine's day can not be complete without candlelight and roses. Combine the two in a glowing centrepiece that will warm any heart.

Get the look

Place a tealight, along with its holder, in the centre of a square wooden or ceramic box. Raise it up so that the top of the holder sits higher than the rim of the box. Fill the empty space in the box with rose petals before placing in the centre of your table.

Be a sweetheart

Add some extra sweetness to your meal and fill some perspex hearts with some sugary treats - not only do they taste good, they add a pretty touch to the dining table.

Get the look

Confetti sells heart-shaped favour boxes, which you can fill with treats of your choice. Bon bons are a traditional choice, but love hearts or red and pink jelly sweets work just as well.

All White on the night

If hearts and flowers just aren't your style, make your meal special with an all-white table setting- this looks formal and adds an elegant touch to any dining space.

Get the look

Cover your table with a white linen tablecloth, before setting out silver cutlery. Place a soup bowl on top of each dinner plate, before laying a simply folded white linen napkin across the bowl. For a finishing touch, place a small tumbler holding a single white rose, on top of the napkin.

Make glasses sparkle by rinsing them in water with a few drops of white wine vinegar.
