The biggest problem with shady area is they tend to be hard to keep things growing in the yard especially under large trees. There is a solution for those bare spots and that is shade loving groundcovers. There are a wide variety of groundcovers that do well in shady spots from evergreen, semi evergreen, to deciduous The real trick to growing lush groundcover beds to get rid of all those bare spots is to provide the right growing conditions. You can not grow plants that require moist conditions with plants that like dry feet.

When searching for groundcovers a little research will go a long way to making this a successful project. Be sure of the type of soil that is in the area you are going to plant. If the plants need an acid soil and yours is alkaline you will not be successful. You will need to amend your soil to meet the conditions that make the plant thrive. Also soil moisture is another consideration be sur your soil will hold the right moisture level for your plants.The worst thing is to plant a bed of beautiful plants only to watch them yellow and die because of too much moisture or because the soil is too dry.

lets take a look at several groundcovers that do well in shady areas.

Plantain Leafed Sedge ( Carex plantaginea ) is a native of most of eastern North America. This plant has unusually wide shiny evergreen leaves with vertical veins, with brown-black arching flower spikes in early spring This plants grows well in the same conditions as ferns.

Partridge Berry (Mitchella repens) evergreen, glossy, oval to heart-shaped leaves, 1/2 inch across, with parallel veining in the midrib and carpets the ground with its 12" - 18" vines. The bright red berries are edible, and persist all winter. A vine like perennial herb that forms a mat of evergreen leaves under the shade of shrubs and trees, especially oaks makes for a good ground cover in woodsy areas.

Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens) this is an excellent year round groundcover, with, wintergreen scented leaves and bright red berries that are edible with a taste of wintergreen. Will grow in shaded woodland area low growing and very attractive.

Foamflower (tiarella cordifolia) clumps of bright oak-like foliage beneath appealing spikes of white flowers. Spreads by runners.This groundcover is excellent for woodland gardens, when planted in groups it looks fabulous.The leaves turn an attractive red in fall. Herbaceous perennial.
