Rajagopal mum on future with FAM

PETALING JAYA: National football coach Datuk K. Rajagopal refuses to comment on his future following the team’s 1-0 loss to Qatar in their penultimate Asian Cup Group D match at the Shah Alam Stadium on Tuesday. Substitute Abdulkareem Al Ali struck in the 64th minute to book his side’s berth in the Finals – leaving Malaysia with only a mathematical chance of qualifying as they need to finish as the best third-placed team with one more match to play. Malaysia’s last qualifying match is against bottom side Yemen on March 5, 2014. The latest defeat has also, more or less, sealed Rajagopal’s future with the national team, with his contract ending on Dec 31. Although it’s highly unlikely that the former international will be given a contract extension, the 57-year-old said that he’s happy with what he has achieved with the team. “My contract ends on Dec 31 ... I cannot say anything about my future with the team because the FA of Malaysia (FAM) have yet to talk to me about it,” Rajagopal told the post-match press conference. “I’m proud of the team’s performance. From my perspective, it’s been a positive campaign for us and we showed that we can’t be easily defeated.” Malaysia are now ranked only fourth among the third-placed hopefuls with four points. Iraq have six points in Group C, followed by Lebanon on five points in Group B. Syria also have four points but with a better goal difference than Malaysia
