UN Security Council slams deadly terrorist attacks on Yemeni Defence Ministry

"The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the attack on the Yemeni Defence Ministry and hospital that occurred in Sanaa on 5 December, causing numerous deaths and injuries," said a council statement issued to the press here. "The members of the Security Council reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security, and that any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed," said the statement. At least 20 soldiers were killed and more than 42 others injured when suicide car bombings rocked the Yemeni defence ministry in the capital Sanaa on Thursday morning, reports said. Yemeni security sources said that following the explosions, many assailants wearing military uniforms broke into three departments of the ministry, and exchanged gunfire with the soldiers. The Defence Ministry is located in a densely populated area and the attack occurred as local citizens were heading to work. The Security Council members "expressed their deep sympathy and sincere condolences to the families of the victims of these heinous acts, and to the people and Government of the Republic of Yemen, and those countries whose nationals have been affected," the statement said. It said "The members of the Security Council underlined the need to bring perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism to justice, and urged all States, in accordance with their obligations under international law and relevant Security Council resolutions, to cooperate actively with the Yemeni authorities in this regard."
