ผลงานวิจัยครั้งนี้ เป็นการศึกษาผู้ป่วยกว่า 200 คน ซึ่งเกือบทั้งหมดอยู่ในไทย และไต้หวัน อายุระหว่าง 18-78 ปี และไม่ได้ติดเชื้อเอชไอวี เพื่อมุ่งหาคำตอบว่าอะไรเป็นตัวกระตุ้นให้ร่างกายสร้างแอนตี้บอดี้ ขึ้นมาจนทำลายตัวเอง แตกต่างจากโรคเอดส์ ที่มีเชื้อไวรัสเอชไอวี ทำให้ระบบภูมคุ้มกันบกพร่อง จนทำให้ผู้ป่วยรับเชื้อโรคได้ง่ายและเกิดอาการป่วยต่างๆตามมา

ทั้งดร.บราวน์ และดร.แอนโทนี ฟอซี ผู้อำนวยการสถาบันโรคติดเชื้อและโรคภูมิแพ้แห่งชาติ เชื่อว่า ปัจจัยทางพันธุกรรมและสิ่งแวดล้อมมีส่วนสำคัญต่อภาวะภูมิคุ้มกันทำลายตัวเอง เห็นได้จากผู้ป่วยเท่าที่พบล้วนเป็นชาวเอเชีย

ผลการวิจัย พบว่า ผู้ป่วยกว่า 200 คนที่ทำการศึกษา จะสร้างสารที่เรียกว่าแอนตี้บอดี้ ทำลายตัวเอง ขึ้นมาปิดกั้นอินเตอร์เฟอรอน แกมมา สารโปรตีนในร่างกาย ที่จะช่วยยับยั้งการติดเชื้อต่างๆ ทำให้

ร่างกายสามารถติดเชื้อไวรัส รา ปรสิต และโดยเฉพาะแบคทีเรียได้ง่าย ทำให้เชื่อว่าจะสามารถ หาทางรักษาโรคนี้ ได้ด้วยการพุ่งเป้าไปที่เซลล์ที่ผลิตแอนตี้บอดี้ทำลายตัวเอง
