DESCRIPTION The ginkgo is a deciduous tree that grows to a hundred feet or more, with a trunk eight feet in diameter. Its bark is gray and fissured. The distinctive fan-shaped light-green leaves turn bright yellow in the autumn, have two lobes, and are about two to three inches across with a notch in the middle. The ginkgo bears flowers when it is 20 to 30 years old.
HABITAT The ginkgo is native to Japan, China, and Korea. Now it is grown in moist, fertile urban areas in many parts of the world.
FOLKLORE AND TRADITIONAL USES Considered a living fossil, ginkgo is the world's oldest living tree species. It can be traced back more than 200 million years. Individual trees may live as long as a thousand years. The word "ginkgo" comes from the Japanese ginkyo and the Chinese yinhsing, which means "silver apricot." Ginkgo leaves resemble the leaflets of the maidenhair fern, and some botanists believe that this tree species is the missing link between seed-bearing plants and ferns.
MEDICINAL USES Scientists have clinically established that a concentrated extract of ginkgo leaf increases memory performance and learning capacity, inactivates toxic radicals, and improves blood flow. Scientists have reported that Alzheimer patients receiving doses of ginkgo had delayed mental deterioration in the early stages of the disease. Clinical trials have also shown ginkgo to improve airway passages of asthma patients and to help relieve symptoms of vertigo and tinnitus. A concentrated, standardized extract from the leaf can treat circulatory problems such as arteriosclerosis and high blood pressure.
