This delicate recipe is from our Fall Garden that will soon be at the end. The snap beans have been picked and canned. The Siberian Cale and Swish Chard are excellent and can stand the cold for a while. The first batch of spinach was a failure but the second batch is growing well. The garlic has been planted. We had an abundant fall squash and zucchini season. Now we are getting at the end of those beautiful yellow flowers. We had a mild freeze the other night. Therefore- the squash and zucchini fruits are growing slowly due to the cooler nights, but this is what I have been waiting for since fall started. The squash and zucchini fruits grow slow and the plants stay full of blooms.

I pick those blooms usually in the early am.

Take them inside and wash the flower out with cool water and place them on a towel to dry. Then I cover them loosely and put them in the refrigerator to kept cool until I am ready to cook them. When I am ready to cook I make up a tempura batter or use your own favorite vegetable batter. I make it loosely. I do not want it too thick. Next, I heat up the oil on medium heat. I like to use a good Canola Oil. Then I dip one squash or zucchini bloom in the tempura batter and let it drip for a few seconds. Gently place in the hot oil. Once the bloom comes up to the top of the oil you can start on the next bloom. Cook each bloom 2-3 minutes until they are a golden brown. Place on paper towel to catch the extra oil. You could use this as an appetizer sitting around the stove and eat it as it comes off the stove with a nice light wine and good conversation.
