Guards counterattack in Elden Ring
To complete a defensive counterattack, first find an enemy that is attacking at close range. The early Godric Soldiers of Limgrave are good enemies to test this mechanic, but any enemy dealing blockable damage can trigger the Guard Counter. For example, blocking the Glintstone Pebble in melee range will still allow the Guard Counter to act like a physical damage attack.
To defend against a counterattack, first raise your shield with the left shoulder button (L1), as you are about to take a hit. Once the attack hits your shield and your stamina bar takes damage, press the right trigger (R2). If done correctly, you'll hear a special sound play as your character strikes back with a unique animation, dealing massive damage to enemies' HP and hidden stance meters.
