People are called what they are for all sorts of reasons. Parents find some weird and wonderful ways of naming their offspring. At one time things were more straight forward, but today, it seems anything goes.

Some names derive straight from the bible, names like Aaron, Ruth, and Daniel The names of the disciples have always been popular, even today Peter, Mathew, Mark etc, are still widely used. Judas not so much.

Other names come directly from nature, like Heather, Rose, and Daisy. Flowers have always been a popular choice for girls, they are pretty sounding names and give an image of freshness and beauty.

There are names taken directly from language, my own name 'Trevor' comes from the Welsh words meaning 'big village' My second name 'Andrew' is Greek for 'man' which makes me a man from a big village. Which in fact, I am :)

People even name children after their cars. Bentley, Мерседес and even Jenson, are doing the rounds are the moment. To be historically accurate, the car 'Мерседес' was actually named after the makes daughter, so it has now gone full circle.

The modern trend is to choose place names, names of towns cities and even countries are now in common use. Read the press nowadays and you are just as likely to find a story about a person called Brooklyn, Paris, Devon, or Chelsea as the actual place itself.

I was really pleased when the footballer David Beckham named his son after the American borough of Brooklyn, and not the London area of Peckham. Peckham Beckham would have been taking it just a little too far.
