Welding: The good, the bad and the ugly?

The good part about welding is the bad part about welding. What is it? Anyone with half a brain can pick up a little flux core wire welder, and in the matter of an hour or two they can be welding a decent bead. What is bad about that? It tends to make the general public think that's all there is to welding. They don't know what you'll know after you read this short article. So what's the ugly part?

The ugly part is the lack of knowledge about butt welding machine among the general public, and even welders.

The average person knows a welder. That welder is operating a MIG machine in a trailer factory or they are a TIG runner for some other sort of factory. For example, they build military drones not too far from where I live, and that takes a lot of TIG welding. Most of these welders are not certified to weld. Unless they are doing structurally critical work, they never get an official certification from a Certified Welding Inspector. They can go through their entire careers without a certification.

Yet, it is the welders who are certified in 6G which is pipe welding, that make the serious money in welding.

Pipe welders must pass 6G in order to weld pipe. The 6G position is where the test joint is mounted in a fixed 45 degree position. The welder must move through virtually every possible position while maintaining X-Ray quality welding, to certify 6G. Below 6G are other test positions. For example, pipe that is welded in a fixed horizontal position is 5G. 3G is pipe which is fixed in the vertical position.

Below 3G on the totem pole of importance are the structural certifications - 1G, 2G, 3G, and 4G. Structural welders who typically weld on big steel building frames, get these certifications. They think they are hot stuff, and they do make good money, but it is the 6G pipe welders who are rare, and who make big bucks and drive the nice trucks.
