For years, many people believed that knowledge is power. And knowledge would give them success. Maybe this is why so many in academia believe that they are so powerful and successful. Yet, they are living and breathing a false sense of power.

Let me ask you a question: You spend your life learning, accumulating a lot of knowledge and is your life any better than the individual who learns what he or she needs to learns and then goes out and applies it?

Many educators talk about life long learning. This is the result of the belief that knowledge is power. Granted, there is nothing wrong about learning or acquiring knowledge.

Yet, to be successful, you must transcend knowledge and transform that knowledge into performance. This is call being a self directed learner.

Does that not sound far more powerful because you are directing your actions?

Performance is Applied knowledge.

This is the true power of this century and all before and all yet to come. Dr. Don Kirkpatrick realized that when he constructed his 4 levels of evaluation. What Kirkpatrick saw was the learning, the acquisition of knowledge was secondary to performance that being the application of knowledge.

Every day thousands of people spend minutes to hours learning something new or relearning something old. And if knowledge alone was so powerful, would there not be more success?

How about all those books on business improvement to self improvement? If knowledge was as powerful as some believe, then why the continued plethora of these types of books?

Today, I heard the story about the Golden Gate Bridge and how the engineers constructed this engineering feat using simple mathematical tools. Other examples are many in history of mankind.

Applied knowledge will always win over just plain knowledge!

Now and every day forth, I challenge you to take what you know and apply it. Work your personal action plan. Achieve those W.A.Y. Track you results and see how much further you can go. For action is the catalyst to success.

Just sitting in the field like Ferdinand the Bull smelling the flowers or in this case reading books, may make you smart, but will not make you successful unless you find a job in academia.
