Nothing brings a family together like a holiday dinner. There are everybody's favorites cooking, baking, roasting and smelling deliciously throughout the whole house, guests are coming from all over the place, everybody dressed up and bearing gifts varying from flowers to an apple pie, you can feel the holiday spirit in the house, coming from people's thoughts as much as from the kitchen. You have everything under control but the table and the buffet, which look bland with just the plates and platters on them. In the excitement of having the whole family in one place and the running around between the kitchen and the pantry, you completely forgot about festive little touches that would dress up the dining room. Not to worry, you can fix that in no time and the effect will be as if you planned your table and buffet décor for days.

Even if you didn't buy any decorations, you have enough items at the house to create some last minute. Grab scissors, paper, some latest couture fashion magazines, silk scarves in fall colours, glass dishes and vases and some baskets, add the flowers your guests brought and some leaves from the yard, and you can start using your imagination to make your decorations.

Line a few baskets with your silk scarves and fill them up with nuts, fruit and cookies, and place them on the buffet. Don't be afraid to stick in some golden and red leaves for a better effect, just make sure you clean them off first. Use a couple of decorated baskets to hold low carb bread, whole wheat rolls and fresh baked croissants that you'll cover with linen napkins to keep warm. To secure the napkins to the basket, use safety pins on one side and attach some leaves or flowers for an autumn touch.

Clear vases are great to for example hold utensils. Just tie a small scarf around one, fill it with small marbles and stick a carving knife in it, a sauce ladle, serving spoons and forks, place it on the buffet or the table and you'll have a functional decoration. As for clear glass dishes, use them as coasters. Go through the magazines and cut out pages in fall colours, place them under the glass and cut to shape. That way you'll have pretty autumn details under your casseroles, salads and pies.

If you have some ribbons or a long delicate scarf, you can stretch them over the table to add a colourful touch. To hold them in place cut short the flowers and lay them on top without any particular, geometric design. Additionally, dry off some leaves and using permanent marker write the guests' names on them, to use as place cards. You can also write out the names of different dishes and place the leaves on the buffet. Another way to use them is to put them atop your pie before sprinkling it with powdered sugar, to get a beautiful lace effect.

Getting a holiday dinner ready takes a lot of time and energy, so you may forget about something or simply not have the time to do it. Fortunately you have your guests there, and if you only ask, they'll be more than happy to help out with a last minute store run or decorating the table, so instead of worrying and stressing out, tell them what needs to be done so you can all have a lovely time when you turn off the stove and bring the food to the table.
