When will I know if my plant didn't survive the winter?

Some plants show that they survived the winter in different ways at different points in the spring time. Some bloom. Some bud, and some pop out of the ground. Some may stay green during the winter, but get some new branches. During the first signs of spring, some plants immediately show themselves. Other plants are so late in this process that they are almost replaced. It is very tempting to drive up to the closest nursery and spend big bucks on the thriving plants that were grown in a greenhouse a few months back. Here are some timelines to keep in mind when you are driving up to the store which can save you money.

Usually the last week in March you will see some hostas, dark green monkey grass, hydrangeas, and day lilies popping out of the ground. The nandina and boxwood bushes will begin to get new branches. The maple trees and cherry trees will begin to get their leaves, flowers, or seeds. In the garden, you might see signs of your strawberry plants from the year before.

About 2 weeks later the crape myrtle and oak tree will begin to get leaves. The magnolia tree, and azalea bush will begin to bloom during this time.

Calideums and striped monkey grass are very late in coming up and usually cannot be seen until the last week in April.

Keep in mind that this is a timeline for Georgia. If you live further north, then this timeline may be delayed about three weeks.
