Out of all the Elements of Design, line is the most basic. Different lines have unique impact on your emotions and this helps with the effect the finished piece has. One of the most amazing things about lines is their ability to express through their shape. There are horizontal, vertical, curved, diagonal, and jagged.

Horizontal Horizontal lines have a very calm feel when used in jewelry making as your eye follows them from left to right. The piece of jewelry has a very peaceful effect when horizontal lines are prominent.

Vertical Vertical lines make you feel strong and stable. When used in volume, the piece can feel very structured also.

Curved Curved lines are often very energetic and playful. When you drape and twist different strands of beads together, lots of curved lines are formed. This can also make people feel happier or less stressed.

Diagonal Diagonal lines also have energy, yet the way it is expressed is quite different than the energy that curved lines have. Curved lines often have the energy of a child, yet diagonal lines have energy in a much more sophisticated and palatable way.

Jagged Last, but not least, jagged lines show enthusiasm and anger. Jagged lines are when a line turns at sharp angles. This is otherwise known as a zigzag.

Shape

The shape of the different parts of your work (beads, components, etc.) have different feelings to them. There are actually two main types of shapes. These are organic shapes and geometric shapes. Organic shapes are flowing and normally represent natures. Organic shapes often feel free and natural.
