One item of home decor that does not readily come to mind for most people is wall hangings for outdoor walls. Most people take the time to decorate their indoor walls with paintings, pictures, draperies and the like, but many outdoor walls are simply painted and that is it.

Outdoor walls can be enhanced in any number of ways. For example there are metal flower boxes that affix to outdoor walls. Many are very stylish and ornate. Rather than planting flowers in pots or planters that are on the ground, you can plant them as high up on a wall as you want to. Beneath a window is always a good place. With proper placement these flowers are more visible than ground based flowers and add an incredible look to you front or back yard. Ever hear of a "Greenman?" They make extraordinary outdoor wall decor. Greenmen were originally church art. For modern purposes a Greenman is a sculpture of a face surrounded by leaves, branches or vines. These may sprout from the nose, mouth, nostrils or other parts of the face. While this may sound a little bizarre, Greenman wall hangings are incredible pieces of art and extremely interesting to look at. The faces and the greenery seem to meld into each other. They come in all shapes and sizes and several design types such as Gothic, French or old Victorian. Women's faces are also available although they are still referred to as "Greenmen." You can even find a Greenman where the face is that of a witch or other creature rather than a human face. Many Greenmen are used to hold plants or flowers. In short, they are decorative ornamental sculptures that affix to your outdoor walls and create a unique presence.

A simple idea, but one that can make a difference, is to put a large doorknocker on your front door. Even if you have a doorbell it will bring an unusual decorative element to your door. Coincidently, there are Greenmen doorknockers, but there also are doorknockers in the shape of lions and other animals. Many are replicas of doorknockers that were used in past centuries.

Another simple idea is to get a large address marker personalized with your address. These come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but the ones that are replicas of old European estate plaques are particularly nice. If you don't want to affix it to a front wall, you can get a lawn state and display it in your front yard. There is the obvious additional advantage of making your house easier to find.

Weathervanes are another idea. The ones that are мейд today do not resemble the ones that were used on farms. Many are мейд of copper and come in the shape of horses, witches, birds and fish among others. Although historically weathervanes were solely instruments for detecting weather changes today's weathervanes are decorative displays..

If you want to go all out, then it is time for a dragon or gargoyle outdoor wall hanging. Nothing changes the look of your outdoor walls more than one of these mythical creatures. They lay flat so that they look like they are crawling up you wall. They are not as good as a "Beware of Dog" sign, but they still send a message - a decorative one.

Give some thought to making your outdoor walls as interesting as your indoor walls.
