Mothers Day approaches and the usual kerfuffle happens every time. What to get, Mothers Day flowers to the fore, when to fit in the time to get something even assuming you know what to get! Panic is allowed. But instead think laterally about this, what do you want to achieve?

1. A smiling happy Mum

2. Not to spend a fortune - we are all broke at the moment

and

3. Something she wants to receive and not have 3 of them already tucked into drawers.

So do flowers by post fit any of these desired results? As I said, it depends.

First of all they have to be fresh when they arrive, nothing is worse than opening her gift box and finding disaster. The best way to avoid this little problem is in the packing, the flowers have to be really fresh when they go into the packaging and there are a lot of things to do which all take time if done properly.

ie: the flowers should be properly treated by the grower, the time taken to bunch and style them should be short and the flowers returned to water containing professional solutions to preserve them. This last bit is most often not followed by very many florists as it can be expensive, they rely only on plain water which is OK but could be a lot better, they have to save on costs of course.

Then what kinds of Mothers Day flowers would most Mums like? Big bouquets needing several vases or odd varieties which she doesn't know how to deal with, maybe just carnations though could be boring. What you need is something different.

Consider the space she has to display her blooms, big bunches look good to you but maybe to her - a lot of work. So what about the luxury end of the flower spectrum? I don't mean big prickly flowers from the Caribbean either, they do look good but not really in a normal home, they need space to show up well.

Well one of the things a lot of people say about flowers is that, these days, they don't smell any more and that is sadly true but there is an exception and that is the delicate colourful freesia. The best ones are Guernsey freesias and if fresh picked then packed on the same day, they last very well, in fact just about the same as carnations, but the perfume, aah it is memorable and take it from me, ladies love them.

You can make your gift even more special though by adding in an exotic which is delicate in size and style and which will match the freesias perfectly - orchids. Just the word conjures up images of opera, luxury, gifts from gentlemen, maybe not, but they are lovely and go with freesias for sure.
