The time has come. You have decided you want to get green fingers. Gardening is for you. Thought you have a decision to make first. Just which type of garden do you want, which is right for you? There are a number of different types with not all suitable for everybody. Do you want to go for a flower-based garden that looks nice or perhaps something more functional and grow vegetables to eat perhaps. Let's take a brief look at some of the choices to help you make your mind up.

Your choice may be significantly influenced by such factors as the room you have for your garden, the current state it's in, how much time you have to cultivate it, the prevailing weather conditions, access to a water supply, the quality of the soil and more so you'll want to think about all those things also. If you have a large enough space and the enthusiasm to keep it up you might think about segmenting parts of your garden for different purposes - flowers, vegetables, fruits etc.

Perhaps the easiest and most straightforward for a garden starter are some nice flowers. Possibly stocked with hardy perennials which will last all year round and you can get more creative with experience. To get started with your flower garden you might do a spot of internet research for suitable flowers to start with or nip down to your local garden centre and seek some initial advice, stock, tools and soil treatments such as fertilisers. Then you're on your way.

Another alternative is a vegetable garden. Grow your own food, cook it and eat it knowing you have the satisfaction of it coming from your own labours and that you have reaped what you have sown. Vegetables of different types can be cultivated pretty much all year round though some are more seasonal in when they mature for eating so do take that in to account when planning what stock your garden will hold. Generally speaking, vegetables tend to take less of your attention than a traditional flower garden does. So if you have less time to spare, growing vegetables might be for you.

A third alternative you might consider for your choice of garden is to grow fruit. Apples for example. However you should be aware that growing fruit can be quite a demand on your time particularly to see off pests and insects that are attracted to fruits. It is suggested that you check that the type of soil you have in your garden is also suitable for fruit cultivation. So if you have the time to cultivate it and will enjoy eating fruits you have grown then this type of garden might hit the spot.
