Vegetable container gardening is the ideal way to garden when you are short of space, you will be amazed at the high that can be had from small spaces. if you are a city dweller where a shortage of space is very common, container gardening is the ideal way for you to enjoy freshly grown vegetables and herbs. Unfortunately, you will not get to grow every single vegetable that you would like, but pick a few favorites and work with that. if you have neighbors who like to grow vegetables in containers as well, you may be able to swap with them to add variety to your table. Some creative arrangement and mixed in with a few flowers you can make for yourself a little bit of the country side in the city and a conversation piece for visitors.

With a little imagination you can convert almost any old container into a mini garden, wooden barrels, large and small flowerpots and planter boxes to name a few, you are only limited by your imagination. If your balcony is part of your living space, you may like to invest in some fashionably pots to use as your garden containers. There is no reason why miniature garden should not look great also. Your vegetable container garden can be both indoors and out, the key ingredient is sun so if inside find a bright area in front of a window that gets lots of sunlight, if you have a sunny kitchen you can grow a mixed herb garden and have the luxury of freshly picked herbs to add to your cooking. Plants are pretty amazing things- even without the correct amount of sunlight they will produce a crop, albeit a small one.

A good soil mix with lots of organic matter is very important for good growth, always add fertilizer when first planting and keep fertilized over the growing period. Water accordingly, not too much or too little. Remember to organize a neighbor or friend to water your vegetable garden if you are going away on vacation, if it is a short trip you can use a few old plastic soda bottles as an automatic watering system. Fill them with water and replace the cap, put one or two small holes in the cap and push upside down into the soil and you have a cheap drip feed system. Experiment with the size of the holes to adjust the water flow to suit the type of plants you have and the size of the container.

To maximise the use of your available space, consider using hanging baskets for some of your vegetables, in particular those that have many fast growing branches or are vine like. You will also need small stakes or a frame to support other varieties of plants. A little regular maintenance and a bit of love and your mini vegetable garden will keep you in fresh vegetables and herbs for a good part of the year and save you money in grocery bills.
