 ในวันนั้นเอง นายเฟรนช์ตัดสินใจใช้ชีวิตแบบคนวัยเกษียณและเริ่มปรึกษาแพทย์ผู้เชี่ยวชาญด้านระบบประสาท เพื่อตรวจหาสาเหตุการเปลี่ยนแปลงพฤติกรรม

  “พอหมอบอกว่าสมองของเขาฝ่อ ฉันยืนยันกับเขาทันทีว่า ไม่ว่าจะเกิดอะไรขึ้น เราจะผ่านมันไปด้วยกัน ฉันจะอยู่ข้าง ๆ เขาเสมอ” นางเฟรนช์กล่าวถึงคำมั่นสัญญาที่เธอมอบให้กับชายซึ่งอยู่ในดวงใจของเธอเสมอมาในวันที่มืดมนที่สุดวันหนึ่งของคนทั้งคู่

  ในช่วงแรก ชีวิตของทั้งคู่มิได้ยากลำบากมากนัก เพราะอาการของนายเฟรนช์มิได้ทรุดลงทันที ทั้งคู่ยังคงพูดคุยกันบ้างถึงการเตรียมความพร้อมต่าง ๆ เพื่อรอรับมือกับสิ่งที่จะเดินทางมาถึงในวันข้างหน้า บ่อยครั้งนายเฟรนช์ยังจะเดินไปรอรับภรรยากลางทางเมื่อเธอเดินทางกลับจากการสอนภาษาอังกฤษให้แก่ผู้ที่สนใจเรียนภาษานี้เป็นภาษาที่สอง
 “เวลาฉันเห็นเขาเดินตรงมาหาฉันแล้วยิ้ม ฉันจะรู้สึกว่าเขาหล่อจังเลย ทุกครั้งที่ฉันเห็นเขา ฉันคิดอย่างนี้ตลอด” นางเฟรนช์บอกเล่าความรู้สึก

  ทว่า หัวใจรักของเธอมิอาจพิชิตได้ทุกอุปสรรค เพราะผู้ป่วยด้วยโรคสมองเสื่อมมีพฤติกรรมหลายอย่างที่คาดเดาไม่ได้ วันหนึ่งเธอกลับมาบ้านและพบว่าเขากำลังอยู่ที่เตาโดยที่ไม่รู้ตัวว่าถุงมือกันความร้อนของเขากำลังเริ่มติดไฟ
