In my career as a Technical Writer and Editor, I have found that people tend to click the first option that the Spell Checker presents them with. This has sometimes lead to some extremely funny faux pas.

Here is a collection of some of my favorite sentences that include mistakes not picked up by the Spell Checker. These are sentences that I have actually come across over the years. See if you can find the mistakes (the mistakes are explained at the bottom of this article).

When end-users were asked why they purchased a specific product, one of them answered: I licked the product.(1)

I guess the end-user was particularly hungry that day.

Here's another example of a hungry person: Oracle is an inedible part of this. (2)

I didn't know that programs had a box where you could go to get massages, but this programmer did:

Confirm the massage box for the program update. (3)

This sentence was particularly embarrassing:

I would like to apologize for the incontinence. (4)

Here's another sentence dealing with bodily functions:

In the Domino secretion: Enter the complete path. (5)

And my all time favorite:

To reach this table, perfume the flowering steps. (6)

The Spell Checker is a great utility, but it's not foolproof. Here are is a list of some words taken from documents that I have received, of mistakes that the Spell Checker did not pick up on since they are correctly spelled words.

So, the bottom line is, don't rely completely on the Spell Checker. It's always a good idea to reread what you've written.
