Proper care of the orchid starts from planting. Therefore, you should plant the orchid in a potting mix that is of good quality. You should ensure that the pot has the capability to drain water properly. This is important because the roots of these type of orchids are fewer thus making them more vulnerable to rotting. The pot should be large enough so that it can accommodate the roots adequately.

Light and temperatures are another essential factor when caring for Paphiopedilum orchids. When there is no adequate sunlight you can use fluorescent bulbs to supplement the lighting. These orchids prefer bright lit spots however when you find that the leaves are turning yellow this should be an indicator of excessive sunlight. If you want to have better growth of the orchids, you should avoid moving the plants in to different locations. This is because the plants take time to adjust to new conditions. When you find a good location for the orchid it should be its permanent place for its habitation. You should at all cost, avoid temperature variations of the orchids. At night, the orchids survive well with 600 Fahrenheit while at daytime the preferable temperatures are 700 Fahrenheit. This type of orchid has got two types of leaves which include the solid green and mottled leaf. The solid green type of orchids requires cooler temperatures than the mottled leaf type.

Moisture content and fertilizer application are other two important issues that you should know about when you are caring for the Paphiopedilum orchids. You should never keep the potting mixture when it is soggy, you should keep it when it is moist. You should water the orchid when the mixture in the pot is dry. During winter, you should water the orchids at least once in a week. During summer, you should water the orchids twice in a week. You should apply a water soluble fertilizer every month to the potting mixture. You can use a humidifier to increase the relative humidity which is essential in the development of the orchids.
