Need to remove daisies from your lawn or weeds from your vegetable plot? Would your lawn appreciate a bit of TLC?

Many people when they visit a garden centre or hardware store to purchase garden tools are presented with an array of different tools to choose from. Fork, spades and hoes of different types are all readily available. However many do not sell some lesser known garden tools that can make many tasks much simpler and easier.

Here are three of those tools which I would not be without.

Daisy Grubber

Over the years the task of removing the weeds from our lawn has been neglected. Like most people we just mowed the lawn and trimmed the edges to keep it looking neat. However a couple of years ago we decided to remove the daisies which had spread over the lawn.

Any weeds need to be removed with the roots intact to make sure there is no re-growth. So we decided to purchase a daisy grubber for a few pounds online.

The daisy grubber has two flat prongs on the front of the tool which are slipped under the bottom leaves of the daisy. The construction of these tools means they work on a pivot action similar to how a see-saw works.

Once you have the prongs under the leaves it's just a matter of pressing the handle down to raise the prongs at the front and the pivoting action lifts the daisy from the ground.

Although called a daisy grubber other lawn weeds can be extracted using this cheap and effective tool.

Swoe

For years I used a hoe to keep the weeds under control in my vegetable plot and flower borders. Then I was introduced to the swoe. The easiest way to describe it would be to say it looks like a golf putter with three sharp edges.

Although it takes a little getting used to, it has a major advantage over the standard hoe. A hoe will cut on the push stroke but with a swoe you are able to cut weeds on the push and pull strokes as well as sideways. This means you are able to sever weeds that are to the side of plants or vegetables as well as any located behind them from standing in one position.

De-thatching Rake

Each year our lawns collect a build up of debris and dead organic matter known as thatch. If left on the lawn the build up will restrict light and nutrients from reaching the grass and its roots.

You can use a wire lawn rake to remove the thatch but a de-thatching rake is specially built for the purpose. A set of crescent tines or blades are set at 90 degrees on a head which is attached to a handle.The shape of the blades are designed to pull up the thatch on the pull stroke.

De-thatching the lawn can be strenuous, so another option is a de-thatching rake which has wheels mounted on either side of the head.

None of these tools are expensive to buy and will help your lawn look great and keep your flower beds or vegetable plot weed free.
